Countdown to Christmas: Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales (1979)

Bugs Bunny skewers Dickens, plus other craziness, in Bugs Bunny's Looney Christmas Tales, which premiered on CBS 37 years ago last night (November 27, 1979).

The parody of A Christmas Carol leads off, followed by a Road Runner short, then one last piece.

DePatie-Freleng was commissioned to produce the first short, while the Road Runner short was produced by Chuck Jones.

Edit, 11/28/21: The video has been deleted. In its place is a title card:

I've seen only the Christmas Carol parody, shown on its own on Cartoon Network in later years. The others I haven't seen.

Rating: B-.

I saw this special when it originally aired on CBS. Since then, the individual shorts have aired occasionally on Cartoon Network. Oddly enough, I enjoyed the seven minute parody of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" more then I did the entire 60 minute special "Bah, Humduck!". Yosemite Sam is much more convincing in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge than Daffy Duck was.

Sam or Elmer would easily be more convincing as Scrooge than Daffy. Somehow, though, I find Disney's version a little bit better.

This one always felt the cheapest of the bunch production-wise, of course not to fault the collaborative efforts of Friz and Chuck, it just didn't gel quite right for me watching it as a kid, read someplace of a Korean studio that got to work on one of these and I couldn't be surprised if it was this one. One goof of note to mention is the missing top part of the curtains of a window in Sam's bathroom that apparently were on a separate cel that some camera guy forgot to stick under the camera, it pops in eventually but it's too late!

Cartoons from this were later seen as standalone shorts for LT showings on Saturday Morning and elsewhere.

And they're likely to turn up again before Christmas. We think.
