Saturday School: Don't Drown Your Food (1977)

I don't have the exact year on this short piece produced by DePatie-Freleng for ABC in the late 1970's, but its message should still resonate in today's health-conscious society.

"Don't Drown Your Food" suggests that it's better not to flood your foods with milk (for breakfast cereal) or condiments such as ketchup, salad dressing, or sour cream. The "lifeguard" serving as our narrator is voiced by Arnold Stang (ex-Top Cat). Uploaded by SatAMBrainFood.

Boy do I remember this one!

I thought at the time why would there be a PSA for foods soaked in salad dressing when there were far more important things to preach at us?

For the record I used to add a bit too much milk in my cereal, although I think that was because I thought that was the norm! I remember how so dry looking the cereal bowls in commercials were when about one inch of milk was added to it!

The salad dressing warning was a fair one since my parents used to tell me to try something before you add something to it, or risk covering the flavor completely with the additive.

Even today I tend not to drown my salads! I guess it worked after all!

It is one of the oddest PSAs I've ever seen, but it, too, planted a proverbial seed in my little head that grew in adulthood. It's been YEARS since I've eaten anything smothered in gravy!

I too used to drown my cereal in milk, but in recent years, I've cut back on it. Seems the only time I "drown" anything these days is if I overdo it on the grated cheese with pasta and/or pizza.

Too bad ABC/Disney can't be bothered to revive these bits.

I remember watching this as a kid, but I still drown all my food. Ketchup, bbq, salsa, ranch... I love them all! And the best part of eating cereal is drinking the left over milk when you are done.
