There'd been two prototypes before Yosemite Sam made his official debut in 1945's "Hare Trigger".
What we learned: While Bugs can play a fiddle right-handed, he is a lefty as a banjo player. Ye scribe can relate. I'm more comfortable playing air guitar left handed. I digress.
Edit, 7/9/24: Dailymotion deleted the video. In its place is a short excerpt.

Yosemite Sam was largely the creation of Friz Freleng, who felt that Elmer Fudd was too stupid to be a formidable foe for Bugs. To Friz, Bugs came off like a bully picking on Elmer, so he created a tougher, meaner opponent for the rabbit to square off against. The association was so close, in fact, that before the closing of the studio, none of the other Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies directors called on the services of Sam.
In other words, Sam felt like Rodney Dangerfield at the end.
