Toon Sports: Rabbit Punch (1955)

Paramount's Famous Studios served up "Rabbit Punch" as part of its Noveltoon line in 1955. As these shorts were incorporated into The New Casper Cartoon Show 8 years later for ABC, these were rechristened, Harveytoons.

Moe Hare & Tommy Tortoise square off in the boxing ring in a take-off on Aesop's classic The Tortoise & The Hare, which WB had parodied with Bugs Bunny and Cecil Turtle on a couple of occasions.

Moe was clearly a rip-off of Bugs, but willing to resort to dirty tricks to get ahead in more malevolent ways that Bugs never dreamed of. Small wonder, then, that Moe was never heard from again.

Rating: B.

I’ve been wondering for years about those two characters who appeared in the HarveyToon/HarveyFilms opening (featuring Casper, Audrey, Huey, and Herman and Katnip), and now I know who they are: Moe Hare and Tommy Tortoise (better check your spelling). I guess Famous Studios were in a phase where they had trouble coming up with much more unique characters. Personality-wise, Moe’s got nothing on Max Hare from Disney’s Silly Symphony shorts. At least the gags are pretty much different from what the other tortoise & hare adaptations included.

Thanks. I'll correct the spelling, as the information I obtained had the incorrect spelling for the turtle.
