Toons You Might've Missed: Sudden Fried Chicken (1946)

From Famous Studios' Noveltoon series comes this farce from 1946, "Sudden Fried Chicken".

Now, we're all familiar with Herman (Arnold Stang), who teamed with Katnip in the 50's, but it turns out Herman had already appeared in a number of shorts with Henry, a rooster, and his wife, Bertha. "Sudden Fried Chicken" spelled the end for Henry & Bertha, and it would be a few years before Katnip made his debut.

Here, Henry is coaxed into fighting in a boxing match to win some money and respect.

This was included in a Disney Channel movie years later, but hasn't turned up much since.

Rating: B-.

Without a doubt, the bulky hen has got to be one of the most detestable characters Famous Studios ever made. Just a warning for any viewers out there who hate stereotypically abusive and unredeemable wives.

Maybe that's why this was her swan song with this episode.

If you ask me, she was WAY more antagonistic than the initial boxing champ. I assumed she was going to have some kind of comeuppance in which she concedes or perishes, but no, the animators made her beat the feathers off Hector (that’s a name I think I heard) and get away with it.

A hostile woman being a full on jerk/bully to her meek husband does not a good comedic story make. If I were the animators, I would have had, like, a pack of ravenous foxes hunt her down and reduce her to bones. That’s how much I hate her.

Still, I’m glad I was introduced to Herman through the shorts featuring him and Katnip.

Until I found this, I didn't know Herman had a pre-Katnip career.........
