Toon Sports: Dexter plays dodgeball (1996)

From season 1 of Dexter's Laboratory:

Dexter doesn't want to go to gym class, but a substitute teacher forces him to endure a week of dodgeball, and it doesn't help that there are three idiots passing themselves off as bullies. Of course, as Bugs Bunny famously put it, you realize this means war.

Leave it to Dee Dee to be a buzzkiller.

From Primetime to Daytime: Hell hath no fury like Wilma Flintstone (The Flintstones, 1960)

From season 1 of The Flintstones:

Barney (Mel Blanc) buys Betty (Bea Benaderet) an engagement ring (??), and has Fred (Alan Reed) hold it for safekeeping. Wilma (Jean VanderPyl) finds the ring, and assumes Fred bought it for her. Uh-oh!! Now, Fred, who doesn't have the money to buy a 2nd ring, talks Barney into an exhibition boxing match with the champ. The girls ask the champ's manager to let Barney win the fight, but Barney's clowning proves costly. Believing they've been double-crossed, welllllllll......

Notice how the boxing gloves were made from the same cloth as Fred's shirt. Hmmmmm.

Saturday Morning's Forgotten Heroes: Wonder Wheels in The County Fair (1977)

I think we had this one up before, but it was taken down. It's back, but for how long, who can say?

Wonder Wheels is at "The County Fair" to foil a larcenous duo of thieves, one of whom is also competing in a motocross race.

From season 1 of The All-New Popeye Hour:

Toon Sports: A famous skating rivalry is parodied, with a happy ending (Problem Child, 1994)

From season 2 of Problem Child:

Cyndi, one of Junior's closest friends, is entered in a skating competition, but her parents are so, so focused on her winning, they don't want Junior offering support. Meanwhile, a rival skater, Tonya, has hired Principal Peabody (Gilbert Gottfried, Aladdin) as her manager, and he's trying to sabotage Cyndi's chances of winning.......

Once Junior figures out Peabody's behind this get rich quick scheme, it doesn't take him long to make the principal regret it.

This was a send-up of the real-life issues between Olympic skaters Tonya Harding & Nancy Kerrigan around that same year that became tabloid fodder.

Looney TV: More shilling with Bugs Bunny & friends (1960-9)

Happened across this compilation of ads, some of which were in-show spots from The Bugs Bunny Show during its primetime run (1960-2), and some we've used before, for Alpha-Bits and Tang. Voices by Mel Blanc, except for Elmer Fudd (Hal Smith, The Andy Griffith Show):

One spot segued into an Alpha-Bits ad with Jack E. Leonard as the postman, pre-Lovable Truly. Ah, those were the days.

Toons You Might've Missed: Sudden Fried Chicken (1946)

From Famous Studios' Noveltoon series comes this farce from 1946, "Sudden Fried Chicken".

Now, we're all familiar with Herman (Arnold Stang), who teamed with Katnip in the 50's, but it turns out Herman had already appeared in a number of shorts with Henry, a rooster, and his wife, Bertha. "Sudden Fried Chicken" spelled the end for Henry & Bertha, and it would be a few years before Katnip made his debut.

Here, Henry is coaxed into fighting in a boxing match to win some money and respect.

This was included in a Disney Channel movie years later, but hasn't turned up much since.

The 2nd "pilot" for Beavis & Butt-Head (Liquid Television, 1992)

 From Liquid Television:

Beavis & Butt-Head's 2nd short on the series was heavily edited when it premiered in 1992 by MTV censors. The boys attend a monster truck rally, where future teacher Dave Van Driessen ends up getting run over by a truck in mid-song.

In a way, series creator Mike Judge had to clean up the boys' behavior before the series launched the following year. Silly stuff.

Toon Sports: Baseball Fever (Disney's Wonderful World, 1979)

In 1979, at the request of then-NBC programming chief Fred Silverman, Disney's Sunday package was rechristened, Disney's Wonderful World. Unfortunately, this cosmetic change, coupled with a more contemporary theme song, didn't help the flagging ratings, as this iteration lasted two seasons.

As we are in baseball's preseason, it's fitting, then, to present "Baseball Fever", a compilation of shorts, including "Casey at The Bat", narrated by Jerry Colonna, and its sequel, "Casey Bats Again", which we've previously featured, and a copius amount of Goofy and Donald Duck.

Gary Owens was brought on board as the announcer. Casey Kasem, then a studio announcer at NBC on top of everything else on his schedule, is heard at the end of the show for network plugs.

Some segments were edited for copyright reasons.

Toon Sports: The Ski Resort Road Race (Wacky Races, 1968)

As we're in the final stages of a cold snap here in the 518, let's check this winter-themed episode of Wacky Races.

Dick Dastardly (Paul Winchell) makes some ill-advised moves to try to trap the competition, and karma comes calling at the end of the race......

Dick, Muttley, Penelope Pitstop, and the rest of the racers are returning to comics in April, as Dynamite is producing an extra-sized 1-shot. This should get you comics fans interested.

Toon Sports: Sabrina in Basketball Game (1969)

Originally produced for The Archie Comedy Hour, this next item was brought back for Sabrina's solo series 2 years later.

Anyway, old rivals Riverdale & Crosstown meet on the court, and chaos erupts when Crosstown's players decide to use some dirty tricks. Since high school basketball season is winding down over the next few weeks, "Basketball Game" seems appropriate.

Silly fun, but these days, it's rare for a high school team to reach 100 points, as Riverdale did, and here in the 518, two teams did that this week.

Toon Sports: Goofy in The Olympic Champ (1942)

The next Olympics are still a ways off, but let's see how it all began, though the eyes of Goofy in "The Olympic Champ":

The odd part is how Disney avoided doing multiple images of Goofy, unlike other shorts.

First, it was the Muppets. Then, Toy Story. Now, the Simpsons on Monday Night Football

 This is getting silly.

Tonight's Monday Night Football game between Cincinnati just got a little cray-cray with Disney's decision to do an animated alternate feed featuring The Simpsons.

Bart (Nancy Cartwright) will captain the Bengals. Homer (Dan Castelanetta) will lead the Cowboys. Hmm, y'think maybe it should be the other way around?

Here's a promo:

Marge (Julie Kavner) and Lisa (Yeardley Smith) are acting as sideline reporters.

However, there is a catch. As noted in the ad, this will be on ESPN+ & Disney+ only, not on ESPN. They have an alternate broadcast already with the Manning brothers clowning around pretending to be commentators.

But, will we see any interviews on SportsCenter? Stay tuned.

Toon Legends: Popeye in Never Kick a Woman (1936)

The tables are turned, for a change, for Popeye in 1936's "Never Kick a Woman".

Seeing a woman at a sporting goods store working a heavy bag, Popeye decides to teach Olive self-defense, against her wishes. Things change when the woman, presumably the store manager, makes a play for Popeye......

Toon Sports: Rabbit Punch (1955)

Paramount's Famous Studios served up "Rabbit Punch" as part of its Noveltoon line in 1955. As these shorts were incorporated into The New Casper Cartoon Show 8 years later for ABC, these were rechristened, Harveytoons.

Moe Hare & Tommy Tortoise square off in the boxing ring in a take-off on Aesop's classic The Tortoise & The Hare, which WB had parodied with Bugs Bunny and Cecil Turtle on a couple of occasions.

Moe was clearly a rip-off of Bugs, but willing to resort to dirty tricks to get ahead in more malevolent ways that Bugs never dreamed of. Small wonder, then, that Moe was never heard from again.

Toon Sports: Woody Woodpecker in Surf Crazy (2002)

From Fox's ill-fated Woody Woodpecker Show:

Winnie (BJ Ward) enters Woody (Billy West) in a surfing competition after he learns there's a vacation as a prize. Buzz Buzzard (Mark Hamill) may have something to say about that.

Here's "Surf Crazy":

Well, we know what motivates Woody, don't we?

Toon Sports: The Monumental 500 (Fender Bender 500, 1990)

It's been a while since we checked into the Fender Bender 500.

This time around, the racers are in Washington. This is tame compared to the real-life chaos that has consumed the nation's capital in the 33 1/2 years since this first aired. Get in line to catch "The Monumental 500". Our race announcer/narrator is Shadoe Stevens (American Top 40, ex-Hollywood Squares):

So Dick Dastardly (Paul Winchell) is allergic to roses? Who knew?

Toons You Might've Missed: Freddy The Freshman (1932)

Here's a black & white Merrie Melodies entry, springing from the imaginations of Hugh Harman & Rudolf Ising.

"Freddy The Freshman" is based on a popular song of the era, and in this 1932 entry, Freddy is embodied as a canine college student in a raccoon coat who becomes a football hero.

I'd imagine this aired in New York back in the day, when WNEW (now WNYW) had a bigger library of WB shorts to complement later stars like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, & Porky Pig.

Harman & Ising would later bolt for MGM, and WB would adopt the familiar house style of their Termite Terrace studio.

Partridge Family 2200 AD turns 50 this year. With baseball spring training underway, let's take a look at what would be the 23rd century's answer to football, spaceball. Danny (Danny Bonaduce) pretends to play the game to impress his mom......
