Toon Legends: Droopy in Thanks a Latte (1999)

As part of their Shorties series at the end of the 90's, Cartoon Network brought back Droopy for a 1-shot micro-short that recalls some of his earliest adventures.

"Thanks a Latte" revisits some Tex Avery classics like "Northwest Hounded Police", compacted into nearly 3 minutes of mirth & mayhem.

The animation isn't quite as crisp, but the inspiration and spirit of those classics were there.

Rating: B+.

"Thanks a Latte" was clearly made in the spirit of the old Tex Avery shorts starring Droopy and the Wolf. Red even makes a brief cameo!

The animation more closely resembled the editorial cartoons of the day, though. Not fluid enough.

I think that was the idea. All of the Cartoon Network Shorties employed different art and animation styles than the traditional ones of the cartoons they were paying tribute to. Very art school.

Another one of the shorties---Atom Ant, I think it was---used paper cutouts, but not the same as, say, South Park, which was hot at the time. The Shorties & Groovies were just art school homages, and in most cases, not fully formed, as if CN had a deadline to meet.

Yeah, Atom Ant was the one that used paper cutouts. We spoltlighted that one on Twinsanity a while back.

Have to remember to put that one up at some point. Was actually one of the worst ones, IMPO.
