Countdown to Christmas: Frosty the Snowman (1969)

Next year, Frosty the Snowman, the original animated special, turns 45. As we've noted, there've been two follow-up specials, each distinctly different from each other, over the years, and there's also an extended length team-up with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which we'll eventually get to.

Rating: B.

I didn't mind the sequel that would follow but let's face it - THIS is the best telling of Frosty's story!

I didn't really get to know who Jackie Vernon was, he didn't seem to have been on the radar with kids my age as other comics and entertainers, though seeing more of his work online makes it more appreciated. I heard his voice on an episode of "Night Gallery" in which he played a genie. I looked up, wondering where Frosty's voice was coming from!

What can be said about Jimmy Durante that hasn't already been said?

The part where we see Karen crying over a puddle in the greenhouse still tugs at my heartstrings to this very day. Believe it or not, it was my first death scene!

Jackie Vernon was better known for shilling for Sunsweet Prunes (and likely also prune juice) for most of his career. The prune commercials and Frosty make up the majority of his career highlights.

Have to remember to pull up a Sunsweet ad from back in the day.

CBS really gummed up the works by outsourcing "Frosty Returns" to a studio other than Rankin-Bass, but to each their own, I'd say.

Jimmy Durante (narrator) and Billy De Wolfe (the antagonst Prof.Hinkle)-two extremely gifted and hilairously funny vaudevillians...though not sure if EITHER were MAGICIANS (btw Karen was June Foray for the first year or twom then Susan--forgot last namne--played same-named character in 1973 version, with FAMILY AFFAIR and WINNIE THE POOH's Sebastian Cabot, of "MIRACLE ON 34th street'..ProfHinkle's drunken look..LOL

Was it perhaps Susan Silo, who later became a voice director herself, IIRC?
