DePowered: CW shuts down Powerpuff

As part of a makeover under new corporate parent Nexstar (which owns WTEN in the 518), the CW has decided not to go forward with Diablo Cody's reimagining of The Powerpuff Girls.

Powerpuff had already run into some issues well before this point, with the network requesting reshoots, and was not part of the network's 2022-3 or 2023-4 plans.

It's for the best, as Cody's idea was for to girls to be aged up to 20-somethings, in collaboration with producer Greg Berlanti, who has also seen another prospect, Justice U, starring David Ramsey, shut down as well. Once the network's most prolific producer, Berlanti is seeing his roster pared down. The Flash ends its run next week, with Riverdale to follow soon after. There's the prospect that neither freshman drama Gotham Knights nor 3rd year series Superman & Lois would be retained, and with Hollywood in the grip of a writers' strike, no one's really sure when a new season would begin.

For fans of the Powerpuffs, finding DVD's would be your best bet.

Well, this stinks. I was really looking forward to it. I just hope they don't cancel Craig McCracken's revival.

How many cancellations do we have to deal with? Enough is enough.

And nothing of value was lost.

For those who are still craving some more PPG, Craig McCracken is developing a new PPG animated series for Cartoon Network and Max.

Steven might've been one of the few Powerpuff fans actually interested in the live-action series. Aesthetically, it didn't hit right. We'll probably see McCracken's new PPG either later this year or next year, assuming the writers strike doesn't get in the way.

Better in cartoon form than live-action, I say.

I was wondering what would become of Craig’s PPG revival and Foster’s preschool retooling, considering there’s been talk of Cartoon Network being shut down. I’m still thankful Kid Cosmic got to end on its own terms, so I don’t see any reason to bring it back.

As for Wander Over Yonder, I’m still curious as to why Craig won’t tell/show us everything related to all he planned for S3 8 years ago no matter how obvious it is to us that Disney has no intention of reviving it. It’s not like he’ll be hunted down if he does.

So far, he only brought up the fact that S3 would pick up where S2 left off with the refugees still on the ex-secret planet. The ship seen in the episode The Secret Planet gets a makeover “Electric Mayhem style” to become an orbble-powered vessel called the Star Nomad, which Wander and Sylvia use to take the refugees back to their home planets. Craig even says that when Wander invites Hater and Peepers to join them on their journey (which would call for more episodes with the four main characters teaming up), Hater would have to share a room with Wander on the Star Nomad. He never did say anything about the Skullship returning, though I suspect Hater and Peepers would be hiding from Star Force Enforcement Force, who were described as a team of space cops.

Honestly, S3 of WOY can’t possibly be less interesting than S3 of Star vs. the Forces of Evil, DuckTales, Amphibia, The Owl House, or any DTVA show that exceeded two seasons, can it?

Okay, I’m done prattling.

Unless Disney lost interest, and basically said, screw it.

About the only way McCracken would finish Wander Over Yonder is if Disney let him use the series to poke fun at the screwball running Florida.

Cartoon Network isn't shutting down, but it is changing. Basically, their new corporate overlords, Warner Bros. Discovery, are more or less bowing out of the kids & family entertainment racket on CN, save for Cartoonito and IP-based stuff (many of which will be outsourced to CN's European studio Hanna-Barbera Europe), leaving Nick and Disney to hash it out whilst they focus more on teens and young adults, expanding [adult swim] and generally placing the K&F shows onto Max supposedly.

Whether this turns out to be a Golden Goose or a dumpster fire remains to be seen.

As for Craig McCracken's projects, I'm guessing they're both still happening, since I haven't heard any recent news about them being canceled...yet.

The new Foster's would be ticketed for Cartoonito, I'd think. With the writers' and actors' strikes underway, it's not going to be on the air until sometime in 2024 at the earliest.
