Saturday Morning's Greatest Hits: Real World & Want You (1983)

The Bangles made one of their first appearances on American Bandstand in March 1983. You'll notice that this is not the familiar lineup we all know. Annette Zilliskas was the original bassist, but left the group when they signed with Columbia a year later, and ex-Runaway Michael Steele took her place. It's going to be a bit weird seeing Susanna Hoffs with short hair, but judge for yourselves, as the band performs "Want You" and the title track from their lone EP with Faulty Products, later reissued by its sister label, IRS Records, "Real World".

I have this EP! Used to listen to it a lot even after The Bangles made it big.

I happened to wander into a record store and I happened to find it along with the group's later albums. I was intrigued that there was a different bassist in the band but gave it a spin on my turntable. You do get a feel for the group's sound which got a bit more polished on later works.

IIRC, when "All Over The Place" was released, the girls were marketed as a sort of sunshine pop version of The Go-Gos (because of the IRS label) but they managed to break out of that mold. They did work with the Go-Gos in the late 80s for Belinda Carlisle's first solo album. Susannah Hoffs and the Peterson sisters were brought in to sing backing vocals with Carlisle, Charlotte Caffrey and Janet Weidlin.

That's because the Go-Go's were label-mates of the Bangles before the latter went to Columbia. Friendships were formed and bonds made. Too bad there was never a joint tour of the two groups, IIRC.

At the time, no, but when the Go-Gos were touring again in the 90s and later, the Peterson sisters stepped in to do drumming and guitar work. I was present for one of those concerts and it was great!

A merger for the short term, eh? Cool!
