Tooniversary: Snow Excuse (1966)

Speedy Gonzales and Daffy Duck were paired in a series of shorts in the 60's, with Daffy replacing Sylvester as the antagonist getting bamboozled by the fastest mouse in not only Mexico, but the whole freakin' world. "Snow Excuse" wasn't one of their best, due to the predictable gags. Unfortunately, when it aired on CBS, it was edited when it didn't have to.

Here's "Snow Excuse":

True fact: cold weather will force mice to seek shelter indoors. Too bad Speedy wasn't in the big city......

Rating: B--.

This is strictly an opinion, but the Daffy Duck VS Speedy Gonzales shorts rank among the very worst material that WB has ever released in it's long history. Whoever directed these cartoons didn't understand Daffy's character at all. As a lifelong Daffy Duck fan, I hated seeing his character downgraded into being a one dimensional mean bird who has nothing better to do than to antagonize a mouse like some dollar store version of Tom from Tom & Jerry. Casting Sylvester in these roles wouldn't made the shorts any better, but they would have at least made more sense, since cast and mice are natural enemies.

This is known as scraping the bottom of the creative barrel. Why they did away with the WB shield at the time, instead of loaning it out with the characters, I don't know.
