There have been three definitive renditions of Norman Whitfield & Barrett Strong's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", all released in the space of four years.
Creedence Clearwater Revival turned it into an 11 minute jam in 1970. Before that, Marvin Gaye had scored in 1968, and his version gets the most airplay on oldies channels, followed closely behind by the original, recorded by Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1967.
"Grapevine" peaked at #2 for Knight, and in 1972, she & the Pips popped up on Soul Train.
I'd always wondered who did it first, Knight or Gaye. Now I know.
