As season 2 of The Krofft Supershow began, there were changes. For those coming in late, we'll refresh.
1. Kaptain Kool & The Kongs were down to a quartet with the departure of guitarist Flatbush (Bert Sommer), who had a falling out with the Kroffts between seasons.
2. Elektra Woman & Dynagirl and Dr. Shrinker were cancelled. Joe Ruby & Ken Spears created two new series to replace them---Magic Mongo & Bigfoot & Wildboy.
The lineup for the season premiere:
Bigfoot & Wildboy: A top secret government weapon is targeted by crooks, but Bigfoot (Ray Young) & Wildboy (Joseph Butcher) are framed. Marvin Miller fresh off doing some voice work on Land of The Lost, was the announcer-narrator.
Wonderbug: Season 2 opens with pitcher Don Sutton, then with the Dodgers, being abducted. Teammate Steve Yeager makes an appearance. Casey Kasem guest stars as one of the crooks. I think he'd filmed his appearance on The Hardy Boys-Nancy Drew Mysteries around the same time.
Magic Mongo: Len Weinrib has the title role as a bumbling genie. A love spell ends up with Lorraine (Helanie Lembeck, ex-Welcome Back, Kotter, and sister of Michael "Kaptain Kool" Lembeck (ex-Barney Miller)) chasing Ace (Bart Braverman). Larry Larson (ex-The Krofft Supershow) is a series regular.

The Kroffts could easily have brought back Flatbush but played by a different actor, but they chose instead to remove the character with no explanation. Season #2 of The Krofft Supershow wasn't terrible, but it never equaled the magic of the show's 1st season.
If they recast Flatbush, as you suggested, they probably don't change the band's overall look.
