Spooktober: Sabrina meets Scooby-Doo! (2002)

Zoinks!!! While they never crossed paths in the comics during Scooby-Doo's brief stint at Archie Comics, the Great Dane and his BFF, Shaggy, meet Sabrina, The Teenage Witch, during the final season of the series.

"Sabrina Unplugged" is not available online in its complete form, so all we have is this brief snippet in which Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) literally goes online and meets Scooby (Frank Welker) & Shaggy (Casey Kasem). Sabrina had moved from ABC to WB two years earlier, and What's New Scooby-Doo had launched a few weeks prior to this episode airing.

Chalk it up to the network looking to test the waters of Scooby in primetime before his Christmas special aired two months later.

I've mentioned this in other comments on blog posts, but Archie Comics truly missed a giant opportunity in not having Sabrina meet Scooby and Mystery Inc., at least once during that era...

I actually read somewhere at one time, that Archie Comics only had the rights for the Scooby Doo characters for non-North America markets as far as comics were concerned at that time.

I'm not sure I buy that, as I can semi-remember back in the mid-1990s seeing Scooby comics published by Archie Comics in stores in the U.S.; although it's possible Hanna-Barbera didn't really want the gang crossing paths with Sabrina for some reason(copyrights/fans complaining/parents complaining/other reasons).

It's really too bad, as it would have made for a fun crossover...

It's true that Archie only had the rights to not only Scooby, but also the Flintstones and others, but those were written for international markets, and no stories were produced for US readers, else we would've gotten Scooby meeting Archie and Sabrina and the rest of the gang. I took care of that with a fan fic a few years ago that also included Josie & the Pussycats.

@Hobbyfan: I kind of figured I was correct in that the Scooby comics Archie Comics made were only for international markets...

It may have been after DC Comics got the rights to publish Scooby comics that I saw the Archie Scooby Doo comic issues in the U.S.; it may have been at a used book store or somewhere similar in the Seattle area.

Considering that these days, Archie barely is able to release anything, if I were in editorial and/or licensing at DC, I'd see about doing a Scooby Meets Archie miniseries. Forget the 1-shot. A 3-4 issue miniseries would be rad.

@Hobbyfan: that would definitely be fun

You'd think they'd have done that already, but noooooooo!
