Coming Attractions: Freakazoid returns......on Teen Titans Go!

Well, you knew it was going to happen sooner or later. It's just happening sooner than we thought.

Freakazoid, the last of Steven Spielberg's original collaborations with WB in the 90's, is making at least a 1-shot return Saturday.......on Teen Titans Go! on Chumptoon Network.

The plot, such as it is, has Freakazoid (Paul Rugg) teaming up with the Titans to battle his arch-nemesis, the Lobe, who is joining forces with the Brain (the leader of the Brotherhood of Evil). If you were expecting WB's Brain and his dimwitted sidekick, Pinky, fuhgeddaboutit! With the revived Animaniacs, featuring Pinky & The Brain as a back-up feature, just like the old days, debuting on Hulu a week later, CN wanted to get a bit of a jump, but there's no way they'd give Hulu any free publicity. The evil mouse has already appeared on TTG!, along with one of the Warner brothers from Animaniacs, so that ship already sailed.

Then again, TTG!'s producers aren't exactly brain surgeons, and think we aren't, either.

The episode premieres at 9:15 am (ET) on Saturday, and will be available On Demand soon after. You've been warned.

I'm surprised that Cartoon Network hasn't cancelled this show yet. Why couldn't Cartoon Network have [adult swim] Toonami to revive the original show instead?

It still generates big ratings within its target demographic, so it stays on the air, spammed into the ground.

^^What he said. Adults don't like TTG, but kids eat it up like free pizza, and since kids are CN's target demo, well, there ya go. TTG will remain on CN until it stops making them money.

As for the notion of an [adult swim] Toonami revival of the '00's TT, yeah, that was never in the cards. Cartoon Network's Teen Titans show skewed more towards teens and preteens, and WB in general isn't big on shilling their superhero fare towards adults outside of the features and DTVs. You have to remember that adult hardcore comic book fans are but a drop in the ocean compared to general audiences, and a sizable portion of the populace aren't going to watch a superhero cartoon unless it's with their kids. An [as] DC superhero toon would be a hard sell.

Unless it's an R-rated movie, like The Killing Joke.

The only time [adult swim] Toonami aired a DC cartoon was when they aired the final 15 episodes of Beware The Batman in 2014.

Which, because of its violence, fit on [as] Toonami.

Not to mention the TV-PG rating.

And there's that.

Still, the original Teen Titans deserves a comeback.

After it was teased, and they didn't deliver? I'd agree. Problem is, CN doesn't care.

The show got cancelled 14 years ago in 2006 when I was 11. At least Cartoon Network brought Samurai Jack back. That show got cancelled in 2004, but got revived by [adult swim] in 2017. Why coudln't Cartoon Network do the same for the Teen Titans?

The simple answer is that their beancounters and programming suits believe the kiddo's might get confused if both iterations are on the air concurrently.

When I said I wanted Teen Titans to get revived by [adult swim] Toonami instead of Cartoon Network, I meant I wanted to focus on older fans who grew up with that show. It's the same reason why I wanted The Powerpuff Girls and Ben 10 to get rebooted by [adult swim] Toonami instead of Cartoon Network, so I can focus on older fans that grew up with these shows.

Unfortunately, Chumptoon Network doesn't share your sentiments.

Tell me about it.

Coincidentally, 2020 marks the 25th Anniversary of Freakazoid as well as the 25th Anniversary of Kids WB.

Steven Dolce said...

@Silverstar How would an [adult swim] DC cartoon be a hard sell?

hobbyfan said...

Actually, 2021 is the 25th anniversary of Freakazoid! (premiered in 1996).

A DC cartoon on [adult swim], aside from occasional episodes of Robot Chicken, is a hard sell largely because you have older fans who won't appreciate seeing the 2003 Teen Titans series or anything earlier than that in the block because of [as]' penchant for disrespecting the source material.

Steven Dolce said...

No, Freakazoid came out in 1995. Do your research.

I've got two words for that: bull shit.

What passes for satire on [as] is the actual BS, Steven, considering that they don't take the older fans into account when it comes to demographics.
