Retro Toy Chest: Remember Digger? (1978)

Playskool's Romper Room line introduced Digger, a bloodhound, in 1978. Dig the commercial and the folksy jingle!

That same year, NBC introduced viewers to The Buford Files, but, unfortunately, Buford, also a bloodhound, didn't merit any toys.

One reason why I believe The Buford Files never took off is because Buford was yet another one of H-B's Scooby Doo knockoffs, and by the late 1970s, the airwaves were well populated with them; there was one on every major TV network.

But, yeah, I do remember Digger the Dog. I've never owned one myself, but a cousin of mine did.

And yet the networks kept asking for Scooby clones.....!

As for Digger, I think he was off the market by the 80's.

One could also draw comparisons between Digger and Woofer from CBS' Clue Club; both were bloodhounds who wore Sherlock Holmes hats.

One celeb who remembers Digger was comedienne Rosie O'Donnell, who has referenced the toy in her stand-up routine.

Well, it looks like her type.
