From Comics to Toons; A complete episode of Heathcliff (1984)

From 1984's Heathcliff:

George Gately's cantankerous feline (Mel Blanc) has trouble capturing mice (DUH!), but not for lack of trying, in "Say Cheese". Then, Cats & Company deal with a motorcyle gang that abducts Cleo in "Cat's Angels". This video comes complete with long missing bumpers.

One of today's more prolific producers, Chuck Lorre, was one of the writers on the show, as was 70's comedienne Ann Elder (ex-Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In). Like, whodathunk?

Rating: B.

The Heathcliff short in this episode reminds me of one of my favorite lines from The Cat (played by Danny John-Jules) from the BBC TV series 'Red Dwarf': "There's only one way to win a game of Cat & Mouse: don't be the mouse. The cat always wins...unless you believe all those lying cartoons."

Speaking of comics to toons, a question posed by many fans of this series was: how come Heathcliff and Riff-Raff never appeared in an episode together? The answer is because the MacNaught Company, who owned the rights to Heathcliff at the time, didn't want the 2 of them crossing over for whatever reason. Originally, DiC had planned to use Riff-Raff as a rival/frenemy to Heathcliff, but MacNaught was dead set against the idea. MacNaught ultimately got their way, although Riff-Raff's cronies, Hector, Wordsworth and Mungo, interacted with Heathcliff in the show's first season. By season 2, they stayed on the Catillac Cats shorts exclusively; the alley cat trio was replaced by 3 new characters, Lefty, Knuckles and Raoul, who were previously unnamed extras on the show.

The new characters, I think, killed the show, after the Catillac Cats stopped hanging with Heathcliff.
