I'm thinking that Chuck Jones was looking for a new nemesis for Bugs, considering that they were running out of plot ideas for Bugs with either Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam. "Compressed Hare" is also the last of the Coyote "Super Genius" trilogy. The only other Bugs-Wile pairing saw Bugs sub for the Road Runner.

There's the occasional debate as to whether the short "Hare-Breadth Hurry", in which Bugs fills in for the Road Runner, should be considered the 4th short in Bugs/Wile series. I say no, as the formula's different: "Hurry" doesn't begin with Wile setting his sights on Bugs and Wile never proclaims himself a "super-genius" at any point, or talk at all in the short.
Thanks for clarifying my point.
