Saturday Morning's Forgotten Heroes: The Buford Files (1978)

Originally conceived as a component of Yogi's Space Race, The Buford Files would later be spun off to share a half-hour with The Galloping Ghost in the winter of 1979, as the 90 minute Space Race was bombing, much to the surprise (maybe) of NBC executives.

Buford and his owners, Woody & Cindy Mae, were another set of amateur detectives molded in the pattern of Scooby-Doo. Unlike Scooby, however, Buford's favorite pastime was sleeping.

Following is an intro, and a title card for the episode, "The Swamp Saucer":

In case you couldn't tell, the Sheriff on this show, portrayed as a bit of a bungler, was modeled after another Buford, one Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) in the "Smokey & the Bandit" movies. Unfortunately, Buford was kennelled after one season, and hasn't been heard from again since.

Rating: B.

The show was a product of its time, that is to say, a Scooby clone but with a southern accent and a couple of bumbling smokies.

Believe it or not, I could see a more modern update of this show in either aanimated or live action. If it were LA, it could be a bit like the detective shows like "Matlock" or "Murder She Wrote", except tailored to a slightly younger audience. If brought it back as an animated series, it could be written as a southern gothic themed show with animation on par with DCAU and more complicated mysteries.

An updated, animated Buford would be a good idea, as long as it's in the right hands.

Anyone out there? This is the first time I've ever seen anyone comment on how Buford ought to be revived. Everyone seems to think it's just a cheap Scooby-clone.

Have any of you read the large Buford fanfic I wrote and posted several years past? I'd kinda forgotten about by now, but is this the kind of story you think would work? Why or why not?

Haven't seen the story you speak of. If that's on fan-fiction.net, I may take a look at that down the road.
