Animated World of DC Comics: He Who Laughs Last (The New Adventures of Batman, 1977)

While "He Who Laughs Last" was a return vehicle for the Joker (Lennie Weinrib), this installment of The New Adventures of Batman might have actually been intended for the Riddler, since Joker uncharacteristically leaves clues to his pending crimes, a Riddler gimmick.

This is because Filmation had lost the rights to the Prince of Puzzlers, even though Challenge of The Super Friends was still a year and a half away at the time this episode aired in the spring of 1977.

This also kicks off five days of Valentine Toon Crushes, and this time around, that means Batgirl (Melendy Britt). Seems Bat-Mite crushing on the Dominoed Dare-Doll was representative of millions of teenage boys, although I don't think Bat-Mite would be an appropriate representative.......

Edit, 1/18/20: With the video deleted, why don't we give you a screencap of Batgirl instead:

Of course, at that time, in the comics, it was Robin who had a schoolboy crush on Batgirl, who back then didn't return the affection, but that would change years later.

Rating: B.

What's funny about that is that Hanna-Barbera had originally intended to use The Joker for Challenge of the Super Friends, but ended up going with The Riddler because H-B lost the bidding war to Filmation. One can definitely see traces of H-B's original plan of using Joker in the first episode of "Challenge" when Lex Luthor describes Riddler as being "humorous, but sinister" before Riddler whips out a deck of playing cards with various Super Friends' pictures on them (including Gleek!), which bursts into flame seconds later.

Also, Captain Cold was originally going to be Mr. Freeze, Cheetah was originally going to be Catwoman and the Legion's leader Lex Luthor was originally going to be Dr. Sivana, Captain Marvel's arch nemesis, because Capt. Marvel was originally going to be on "Challenge of the Super Friends" as the "newbie" member of the team, but none of this happened because of Filmation's acquiring the rights to those characters.

I think Filmation renewed their license for Captain Marvel, only it took them until 1981 to bring him back in animated form, this time with supporting cast & enemies intact.

Who was your cartoon crush back in the day?

My cartoon crush? Hmm...back then, I was more into toys, robots and spaceships than girls. However, I did find teenage Pebbles from "Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm" to be a tasty little cookie. Around 1978, I was into Daisy Mayhem from "Laff-A-Lympics". What can I say? I'm a sucker for a girl in a Daisy Mae getup.

I hear ya, man. Unfortunately, Dailymotion took down a lot of Pebbles & Bamm-Bamm episodes, and there are 0 on YouTube. Laff-a-Lympics is another story. I think we'll find room for Daisy between now & Thursday.

I do remember Joker getting used in the Galactic Guardians version of SF, as he was allied with Darkseid and that version of the Royal Flush Gang. That was in '84 I think.

1985, actually, Magicdog, and it was Joker's final appearance under the H-B banner.
