Toonfomercial: A most unusual way to sell deodorant (1970)

In 1970, Gillette introduced Soft & Dri deodorant for women, their answer to Proctor & Gamble's Secret. To sell the product, Gillette decided to go for an animated ad campaign, with a talking, female octopus.

TV Land unearthed this gem in the 90's, as you can see. Too bad they can't be bothered to run those retromercials anymore.

I had no idea TV Land ran retro commercials in the '90s. I wish I had known, I would have watched them more often. I think all the retro channels should do this. The shows they run are generally available elsewhere whether it be DVD, Blu-Ray, or streaming, so running vintage ads would be a good differentiator for them. I know it would give me a reason to watch those stations.

Amen to that. Unfortunately, those retromercials gave way to the bottom line mentality and the need to cram as many modern ads as possible into a program that does not need it.
