I do remember this - although its format was pretty much not unlike other Filmation action adventure shows like Blackstar, Tarzan, He-man, etc. in that the protagonist meets a character who has a problem and the hero has to find a way for both sides to come together.
I find it funny now seeing the Dragon Prince looking like a refugee from a hippie horse ranch! He doesn't look like you'd expect a boy who rides dragons to look like! The pilots look very much like steampunk characters - not that it's a bad thing!

Steampunk in 1978? Whodathunk?
Filmation was very big on the moral lessons, moreso than the other studios in those days, and it shows.
