Tooniversary: Moby Duck (1965)

No whales were involved in the creation of 1965's "Moby Duck", which pairs Daffy Duck with Speedy Gonzales. The title is a riff on the Herman Melville classic, Moby Dick, and has no connection to Disney's Moby Duck, who'd star in a series of comic books at Gold Key in the 70's.

Anyway, Daffy & Speedy are on a deserted island, hungry & lonely. When a large box of canned goods arrives, Daffy wants it all for himself, leading to the predictable chaos....

Elements of this short were lifted from others, a sign they were running out of ideas. Film editor Treg Brown left WB after this one, apparently retiring.

Rating: B.

Eh, this is strictly an opinion, but I really disliked the Daffy/Speedy shorts. The creative team at the studio at the time really didn't get Daffy, like at all. This was the worst era for his character; he'd been reduced to a one-dimensional meanie that you weren't supposed to feel sorry for. I'm so glad that the creators who came in to continue the Looney Tunes tradition opted to bring back the 1940's iteration of Daffy, aka the "crazy, darn-fool duck". I hope WB sticks with this version for the foreseeable future; I've had enough of jealous jerk Daffy to last me a few lifetimes.

I like Speedy OK, but he didn't work as a comic foil for Daffy, mainly because this take on Daffy was so bad. When the studio has a decent concept for Speedy, he works; case in point, the New Looney Tunes episode "Tweet Team", in which Speedy teams up with Tweety, Gabby Goat and Marc Antony to foil the machinations of Sylvester, Pete Puma and Claude Cat.

Have to see Tweet Team if it's available on YouTube or Dailymotion. Like, Gabby hadn't been used since the 40's!

Gabby appeared in a couple of New Looney Tunes shorts, including one where he reunites with Porky.

It's too bad it ain't airing at a primo time where I can watch it without programming conflicts on Da Boom.
