Toon Sports: Laff-a-Lympics in Acapulco & England (1977)

Time to revisit Scooby's All-Star Laff-a-Lympics.

From the first season: The teams are in Acapulco and London, England for the competitions, which include a race to the top of Big Ben (!).

One quibble I have is that the Really Rottens missed the boat by not having their Amazonian hillbilly babe, Daisy Mayhem, take part in the cliff diving competition. H-B also missed the boat by not doing enough to bring Daisy back after the series ended.

Our Valentine Toon Crush series continues with Daisy, along with the Teen Angels and Mystery, Inc.'s Daphne Blake. Plenty of eye candy to be had, boys.

Rating: B.

Interestingly (although I'm sure that this is already known here), Melody, the Cabot Twins and Sebastian the cat, as well as Jeannie from the CBS Saturday morning cartoon of the same name were originally planned to be on the Scoobie Doobies team, but Hanna-Barbera couldn't secure the rights from the owners of their respective franchises (Archie comics and Columbia Pictures Television, respectfully). As a result of this, Jeannie was replaced by Hong Kong Phooey and the "Josie" characters were replaced with Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels.

I didn't mind seeing Brenda, Dee-Dee and Taffy, though, as those 3 were pure eye candy. And yeah, it's somewhat curious that H-B never used Daisy Mayhem again after Laff-A-Lympics. You'd think that she could've turned up in an episode of "Yogi's Treasure Hunt" or perhaps in "The Good, The Bad and Huckleberry Hound", both of which featured slightly altered and/or renamed versions of The Dalton Brothers.

H-B was able to retain Jeannie's apprentice, Babu, but due to licensing, couldn't keep Jeannie herself, which would've added to the eye candy total. After Josie reruns had aired on NBC as a mid-season replacement during the 1976-7 season, that would be the last time that series aired on a network, and the rights expired there.

What I'm not sure of is if this was decided before or after the imbroglio with Heatter-Quigley over Dastardly & Muttley......
