Giving Tonto solo adventures was in keeping with the practice at Dell Comics, where he had his own quarterly title for much of the 1950s. It's a cool title that proves Tonto more than a mere assistant to Kemo Sabe, since in solo stories Tonto pretty much can do by himself anything the Ranger does. One thing those comics have over this cartoon is that when Tonto talks or thinks to himself, it's in perfect English, the implication being he's actually using his native language.

ReplyDeleteThe cartoon, unfortunately, continued the stereotype of Tonto speaking as Hollywood "Indians" often did, with some big exceptions.
